My mom went in to this store today to buy some shoes to wear to my graduation. After she tried on 2 pairs and walked up and down the aisles to make sure they fit well, she ultimately decided not to purchase them. She then went to the Wal-Mart in front of the Shoe Dept. in the South Towne Commons to do her grocery shopping. An employee from this store FOLLOWED my mother across the parking lot and proceeded to accuse her of shop lifting. This employee (who my mother later found out was the store manager) claimed that her employees found one of the shoes that my mom had tried on missing from its box. Why, exactly, she thought someone would only steal one shoe is beyond me. The manager demanded my mother show her the receipt for the shoes she was wearing at the time, which were a brand the store doesn't even carry that my mother has owned for at least 3 years. My mother explained this, but the manager threatened to call the police. Anyway, the employees apparently managed to find the missing shoe. The manager offered no apology for her rudeness nor her unfounded accusations. When my mother went back to the store after finishing her grocery shopping to get the manager's name, the manager scurried away to the back of the store like a coward. This sort of behavior is inexcusable, and as someone who has worked in retail for 5 years, I was outraged when my deeply upset mother told this story to me later that day. That is not how you treat people, and it is certainly not how you treat your customers.
