The main reason behind my rating is the overall quality of the staff. I have to bring this incident up because customer service is huge when conducting any sort of business. My former roommate's girlfriend had a very, very bad problem with her roommates smoking weed in the apartment, and she strongly disliked how it always smelled like it day in and day out. She had told them many times to stop, and they lashed out at her. At which point she reached out to the staff at University Park to try and correct the issue, and two RAs came out to inspect the apartment. To my knowledge, the RAs were well aware that the apartment smelled like weed (because the smell doesn't just magically go away when RAs come), but they said that they couldn't go into her roommate's rooms to find/smell more weed because the doors were closed. I partially understand this, but partially don't. It could be an invasion of privacy, but to my understanding, after this RA inspection, nothing was done about the smell or the bad roommates. She was forced to break her lease and move out, which anyone in their right mind wouldn't want to have to do when they're not at fault.
Carpets come pre-stained in case you were worried that you might not get the pre-stained carpets you were expecting. There's no sort of noise reduction in the apartments, if your neighbor 2 floors down is having a party, looks like you're having one too. I've seen people burn trash outside of their doors, throw empty bottles into the street, throw couches off the balcony but when a guest of mine gets caught smoking outside(without my knowledge) they send a security officer to search my apartment and I get slapped with a non-negotiable fine; for smoking a cigarette. Upon calling to try to explain I was told there was nothing I can do and that the trash burning, bottle breaking, couch throwing that went unpunished were all just isolated incidents. I'm a college student with little to no money to my name and this is abhorrent .
In short, if the RAs took their jobs seriously, the noise was dealt with (e.g this and the RAs taking their jobs seriously go hand and hand), the wifi problems were mitigated, and the staff held true to their words, then this set of apartments would be a halfway decent place to live. The amenities are nice, but we are college students, where student does in fact come first. The way I personally see it, and others may or may not feel the same, is that we have just three basic needs for an apartment: decent wifi, decent air conditioning/heating, and mitigated outside noise. This allows us to sleep and do our work. Any other aspects of an apartment, to me, are just simple perks.
Let me start off by saying I have a slightly different lifestyle than some college students, being that I don't play loud music and party until later than 12 or 1 in the morning. The secluded feeling is somewhat nice, albeit you can still hear noise so well throughout all the apartments. The walls are extremely thin, so if someone is playing music in the next apartment, you'll be able to hear/feel it through the walls very, very easily. In this sense, sleep is very important to me so if I'm woken up by loud apartments, I'm not happy.
This is my second semester living at University Park, and I must say that the morale has gone severely downhill since I first moved in.
Great location. Some appliances are crappy but it’s manageable. Walls are really thin. I still love it here though. Best place to live as a sophomore.
This is a fun place if you are a sophomore and want to be surrounded by your friends.
A more important and rather pressing issue is the wifi. I've put in several requests for this to be taken care of, but little progress has actually been done. For 695 a month I understand it's not going to be incredible, but the wifi is very, very bad. If you're trying to do homework at peak times, forget it. The MBPS is often times less than 20, and sometimes less than 10. I spend very little time at this apartment, other than to sleep, specifically because I just don't enjoy being there. I can't get anything done, it's noisy and out of the way, and overall it just isn't the place for me.
Based on the aforementioned problems, it's very recently come to my attention that University Park is a lot of say and not a lot of do. The staff manager even told me that they replaced their wifi servers to $200,000 servers over this past winter break, but what he fails to understand is that you can have the fastest servers in the world, and they still won't perform correctly in the individual apartments unless there is a strong signal connection. The clubhouse wifi is strong, the apartment wifi is not. I also put in several requests for our door to be fixed, but nothing has been done. The reason the weed incident with my former roommate's girlfriend was such an issue is because the RA for my apartment complex said VERBATIM - "if we catch you with drugs you'll be out faster than you know." Well, I hate to say it, but that is a complete lie. She was all bark and no bite. You can say all you want, but unless you follow through with it, your words mean nothing.
I like it here.. safe neighborhood and apartment is relatively affordable compared to nearby once. Proximity to school and everything is great
